Greenwood has not played for his boyhood team since January 2022 after he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault and coercion.

The Crown Prosecution Service later dropped the charges against the 23-year-old after a key witness withdrew. And following an internal investigation into his conduct by United, both parties agreed he had no future at Old Trafford.

Since moving to France, Greenwood has enjoyed a fine debut season under former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

But despite finishing the season second in the league scoring charts behind PSG’s Ousmane Dembele. Greenwood has been overlooked by the French players’ union.

Despite being overlooked, Greenwood was less than convinced about his omission. When asked about Marseille’s 1-1 draw with Lille last weekend.

“I’m not too worried about that,” Greenwood told RMC Sport. “The only thing I’m worried about now is getting Marseille into the Champions League.”

Greenwood’s teammate Geoffrey Kondogbia also reacted to the snub, telling reporters: “We kind of laughed about it. Quite honestly, I don’t know what to say. It’s a choice, and we have to respect it. We have our own opinion of our players and our coach, and that’s the most important thing.”
