As Steve McManaman weaves his own path between the two clubs. He reveals what Alexander-Arnold should expect in the Spanish capital once the deal becomes official.

“Of course it was difficult, I had to learn the language. Of course you go to a new club sometimes it’s a bit lonely, you don’t know anybody. But I knew it was a change I had to make.” McManaman said.

“I know it’s going to be like that, but you have to go in with your eyes wide open and you know you have to work hard, you have to learn the language, you have to get on with the lads, you have to impress on the football pitch, so those are the things I would say (to Alexander-Arnold) if he goes there.”

Trent continued.

“The pressure to succeed is enormous,” he continued. “You know you’re adding to the history of the club you’re joining.”

“Liverpool have a long and successful history, and in the same way, Madrid, your job as a new player is to make history, to win more trophies, and the bigger the better, and it’s easier to adapt when you’ve achieved success. It’s easy to win the fans when you’ve lifted trophies.”

McManaman says Alexander-Arnold having Jude Bellingham to rely on has been a huge benefit as he looks back on his move to Real Madrid in 1999.

“When I got there, not many people in Madrid spoke English.”

‘But you can imagine that everyone in every restaurant, every bar and every hotel speaks English.’

“Of course, no matter which club he moves to, he will have a lot of help from the player liaison officer to help him settle in and help him make the transition, but on the pitch, having someone else who speaks English will be a huge advantage.”
